ALF: 7 years, 5 months ago
Starting last Thursday—October 8th, 2015—a number of ALFs embarked on a zany adventure to get a bunch of work stuff done. This post is the second of two posts about ALF Weekend, read about the organization of the weekend here on my blog. I will cover what we did over the long weekend in the text that follows. This post’s intended audience is Agi…[Read more]

During the first annual ALF Summer (2014), we began to map our accountabilities as ALFs. The exercise was simple. We answered these four questions: What do you do? What gives you juice (try using ctrl+f: […] -

Hey guys!
So the Punished by Rewards reading didn’t really work out…it was a tough read. I wrote a blog post today about me re-reading Democratic Education and thought that maybe our reading club could be a big more organic – perhaps when we read books that inspire us we can then share our thoughts via blog and also post here?

I wrote a blog post about this one today. One of my favorite books. You can see my blog here or just read as I copied and pasted below:
Re-visiting My Roots
I remember thinking that there would be no book that would affect me like A.S. Neill‘s Summerhill when I read it. I read Summerhill during the AERO school starter course led by Jerry M…[Read more]

One idea I am just having is to suggest readings that we feel are a part of our “juice” in this movement.
I would also like to explore and share readings that touch on subjects that come up in our school, like choosing to use minecraft and pokemon and the awesome these tools can create. Or read @abby‘s dr.who marathon…[Read more]

I really like the idea of doing readings, perhaps we could start with short PDFs or even blog posts and work our way up to whole books?

@Nancy I found it difficult to get my hands on a copy of this book during the first two/three weeks of holding this intention. I understand the problem of it being just too difficult a read or being too dense to read and respond to with all of the other projects I’m engaged with. So yes, failure in that sense on my end too. I know I’m not th…[Read more]

@Abram @Charlotte @Dinospumoni @Nina I declare complete and utter failure on the follow through this. I am finding that I’m just too busy to digest such a dense read right now. @Charlotte has expressed the same sentiment. Given that there hasn’t been any posts here, are you all feeling the same way? Perhaps this is a read to take in over a long…[Read more]

I wrote a blog post to day called “The Opportunity of Conflict” and in the beginning of it I share two specific ways our CMB has been used to develop practices as a community to support each other. Here is that excerpt:
When I taught conflict resolution to kids in the past, I always started with the question, “What is Conflict?” to create a dyna…[Read more]

This could work as a different pattern to get the kids to create new tools and patterns for us to use in the school, it feels like a way to invite more participation from those who have a hard time with the meeting format!

I thought that I mentioned this in my last post, but rereading it…oops.
What about RAALFs?
Resident Artist Agile Learning Facilitators? This would be for people that can REALLY model successful independent learning who may not be able or interested in committing long term to the educator role. These people would have a skill set that the…[Read more]

So then I guess we are looking at multiple pathways to ALFing (I imagine there will be more)
Adults coming from an education background/interest
Teens coming from within the community (YAALF)@charlotte; @dean; I feel that these sound like much bigger and different projects (all SUPER exciting!):
Teens coming INTO the community po…[Read more]
