• A couple days ago, Elisha, my sister ( @animalfreak9 ), commented on one of my blog posts. She asked what the chances of her inheriting hazel eyes was. At first, I dismissed the idea as impossible. I didn’t think […]

    • Oh cool discovery!! @alonalearning maybe you can help me understand more too – I remember learning this stuff in school but it’s been awhile so refresher is needed.

Now Tomis has blue eyes and I have light brown eyes. I don’t know if they are light enough to be considered hazel though, but they are lighter than my sister’s eyes. My mom has dark brown eyes (being Vietnamese this is typical), and my dad has blue eyes. My eyes are not dark like my moms but lighter.

So with Tomis having blue eyes and my dad having blue eyes, do you think our future child would have a chance at blue eyes? I always assumed that it would have brown eyes because I did know brown is a dominant gene.

      • That may actually be a possibility!

If Tomis has blue eyes, that means his eye color alleles are bb. Your alleles have to be Bb (brown and blue). Here’s why:

Your mom is totally Vietnamese (as far as I know). No totally Vietnamese people (that I know of) have blue eyes without having a mutation or something. Your mom’s alleles are pretty much definitely BB (brown and brown). Your dad actually has to have the alleles bb because he has blue eyes. If he was Gb (green/hazel and blue) then he would have green/hazel eyes. Not blue. That all means this: Tomis has bb, your mom has BB, and your dad has bb.

Since both of your parents donate an allele to you, you have to have one of each. Your eye color alleles have to be Bb. If you put this in a punnet square, you get these results: 2/4 blue and 2/4 brown. Your guys’ baby would have a 50% chance of having blue eyes!

This might be a really interesting combination if the baby inherited your slightly darker skin and blue eyes.

TL;DR, Yes. 50% chance of blue eyes.

        • Oh cool!!! Thanks @alonalearning!! I am so glad you told me to read this because I never got a notification that you responded to my question 🙂

I agree, we did have a baby and it had some of my darker complexion features but Tomis’s/my dad’s eyes, that would be a cute combination!

Also – I love how you’ve stylized your blog. The about me page with the header that scrolls to the featured blog posts is really neat, and I like the side widgets so you can see recent comments. Now I feel motivated to change up my blog too!

@animalfreak9 I just read up on dominance for eye color.

For you to have hazel eyes, you would need one green allele and one hazel allele. Or two hazel alleles.

Daddy has hazel/green eyes. I’ll call them hazel. This means he probably has one hazel and one blue (he has to have blue because we have blue eyes too!). He could give you either…[Read more]

    Having so much fun on my first day at ALC Mosaic! @sassygirl26 @alonalearning @tessao @animalfreak9 @libby @hermione @sara @katecake

  • Yesterday, Thursday, was moving day for our family. I was at school all day, but at 8:00 in the morning the movers from T.N.T Movers came in a giant truck to take all of our furniture to my Grandpa’s house. When @Animalfreak9 and I got back from school, we went straight to our old empty house  they had taken all he furniture from. They left a few things. For example, the entertainment center that was made costum for the people who had the house before us for the TV area in our living room. The house was so empty! When we got to Saba’s (Thats what we call our Grandpa) house, all of our things were there! The dining room table had 2 feet of things piled on it, and it is a big table! We had all of our books, old toys, and random stuff from out rooms on top of it. When we went up to the giant room @Animalfreak9 and I will be sharing, we were so excited! It has out desks, out dressers, our beds, and Elisha put her fish (Judah Fishabee) on her dresser too. It was like our own apartment! We even have our own door to the garage/door to the outside. I can’t wait until we are all moved in and we have all of our things in order.

I noticed @Libby and @Animalfreak9 are really busy with other interests and also recognize that it’s important to remember that all people can ebb and flow in and out of deep learning. @Charlotte has been thinking about how to create a…[Read more]

Greetings ALC Universe. Many new and exciting happenings at ALC Mosaic this week.

    Highlights:

    Veterans Day with Dan!

-November 11th was Veterans Day and Dan came ready in uniform to share with the students his experience as a Veteran. We learned many cool things like How astronauts shower in space. In case you didn’t know this is how they do it.

    danveteransday
    We love Dan!

Since August @libby and @animalfreak9 have had the goal to Skateboard standing up. And now they’re doing it!!

    ElishaSkateboard

We had morning work out three out of five days this week. Feeling pretty ripped. Andrew planked for FOUR MINUTES! Tessa maintained the splits for ELEVEN MINUTES. I am taking this push-up challenge. We choose our own exercises and we have been pulling inspiration from this website. Here is one of our favorites:

    superplank-workout

Geoguessr UPGRADE! Keeping up with Milo’s suggestion, we now take only 5 minutes per guess. Definitely increased the stakes of this challenge. Check out this map of the places we’ve been. Click on the pins to learn more about the areas! If you want to add to it, just request an invite from any of the ALC Facilitators.

I FINALLY traded @zelda my Thunderous EX card. @zelda is slowly curating a formidable Pokemon collection. @alobob, with his superior knowledge of the cards and their face value, facilitated the trade. I forget what I traded for… but the experience was very professional.

Liam‘s visit and the makey makey.

-Such a pleasure to see Liam from Asheville on Thursday. He brought with him (along with just general awesomeness) a makey makey. He and some folks spent the morning turning anything and everything into a button. ALC Mosaic was so inspired by this device that we are now scheming ways to hook it up to the door so that THIS will play to remind us to move our name tags!

Tai Chi! On Wednesday, @zelda led a Tai Chi class outside in the afternoon. The class was well attended and @sassygirl26 became an apprentice to @zelda. Thank you @zelda for this incredible offering that was masterfully led and scheduled.

In Ecology Club we set learning goals for our time together. We want to learn about different trees and their uses (inspired by Warrior Cats)

-We want to learn about birds through birding, and animals through tracking. Hopefully we will get some snow!

-As we were talking two hawks were circling overhead and calling. As usual!

@libby‘s Upgraded Kanban, with customized sticky holder, pen holder and labels.

    Libertykanban
From @libby‘s Kanban, to @dthomasson‘s stories, to @zelda‘s offering, each of these experiences draw me back to the mullings: What is Agile Learning? And why is it important?
These question have come to me many times. In their most recent form, on Friday when @dthomasson and I attended a science educator meet-up at Zada Janes.
The meetup is for science, math, engineering and tech folks, and any other like-minded parties. Some are tied to the federal STEM initiative and others work for non and for profit entities invested in education.
The go-around prompt “What was you first STEM moment?” got the group to share stories of the powerful moments in their childhood, where they experienced the foundations of STEM and what it means for their practice.
A trend echoed throughout their responses. Each person reflected moments where they had the freedom to explore, and engage in relationship with people or the environment. The memories shared resembled every moment in an ALC.
One man spoke of when he was able to solder a hearing aid with his father under a microscope. “It was so cool” he said, the experience had a significant impact on him.
I think of our parents and facilitators and how we recognize the value, and have the courage to name these moments as learning. Almost every educator in the room could reflect the moments as children where they had the freedom to experience what ALCs hold for each and every day.
I always come back to @nancy‘s What IF. When she asked one year ago, “What IF more children were happy and in a state of flow?” I am grateful to be a part of the answer as it evolves with us.
